Big Bold Blooms

The true origin of the wedding bouquet is hundreds of years old, when a bride would carry twigs and herbs to ward off evil spirits, which might be why the scented bouquet is hitting the wedding bloom scene in recent years.

2020 is promising to be a year for big and bold statements, especially when it comes to florals. More and more brides are opting for flower arrangements that are light, (let’s face it, you will be carrying this around with you for a large part of the day), offer texture and are scented – who wouldn’t love a deep breath of lavender right before walking down the aisle.

Your bouquet will most likely be in 90% of your pictures, you want to make sure that you absolutely love it and that it compliments your dress and ceremony setting. Some things to consider when choosing your wedding bouquet:

  • Flowers should not cover or over power you – it is an accessory and should match your style.

  • There are compromises for smaller, petit brides who want the large, cascading bouquets – ask for a smaller version, like a tear drop bouquet, use short stemmed flowers.

  • Fuller figured and taller brides can sport a more asymmetrical, wider bouquet while leaner brides can consider narrow and lengthy bouquets.

  • A fragrant bouquet awakens another sense, and will be a beautiful reminder of your wedding day when you smell it again.

  • The style of your wedding can help guide your bouquet style too – a traditional wedding might have structured forms and classic blooms while a casual or outdoor event could have elaborate greenery and lots of flowers in different colours and textures or rustic arrangements with different elements like fruit and herbs.

Whether or not you toss your bouquet that’s totally up to you – this tradition was originally used as a way for the bride to distract guests while the newlyweds made an exit from the reception. Many brides are opting to use a secondary bouquet to toss or even a bridesmaid’s bouquet.

If you want to save some money on décor consider leaving empty vases or spaces to display the flowers during your reception, at the head table, sweetheart table, and guest signing table or even in the washrooms, especially if they’re scented. ;)
